Music Murmur ‘Hoguera Noche’ Review
We have been fortunate enough to have our debut single ‘Hoguera Noche’ reviewed by the lovely Kaleigh of MusicMurmur. Big thanks goes to Kaleigh and you can read her kind words on our little tune below.
HOGUERA NOCHE
Staking their identity as a “punkabilly fusion” group that strives to veer off the path of overpolished perfection found in most popular music of today and with influences that range from Anti-Flag to Paramore, Australian band The Curse of Mary Sue is still working on the finishing touches of their debut EP and thus don’t have a lot of recorded music to their name just yet, but their first single “Hoguera Noche” is enough to pull you into their world on its own!
Themed after Dia de los Muertos, the lyrics tell a slightly creepy story of what unfolds when the subjects of the song stumble across a “deathday party” during a bonfire night, and the music compliments the mood quite nicely, with a constant guitar riff and rhythm section (provided by guitarist Daniel Thorne, former bassist James Buckingham, and drummer Matt Laybutt) that’ll make you want to mosh just as much as it’ll make you want to, as the lyrics state, dance and sing until death. I’m unsure if this was another influence or not, but vocalist Elanor Jane’s voice reminds me just a tad of Shirley Manson’s from Garbage, and that’s always a huge plus in my book!
Having played their very first show last August and keeping on track with a couple every few months or so, along with some spotlighting on American community radio programs and podcasts, the attention The Curse of Mary Sue is garnering is well deserved because even just from one song, their intentions and influences are shown in the best ways. Their quest to set themselves apart from the norm doesn’t alienate them either, and if “Hoguera Noche” is anything to base assumptions off of, the rest of their music should be just as memorable and catchy!
WHAT IS MUSICMURMUR
Musicmurmur is a blog devoted to music – all music. Over time you will come to see articles written about seasoned musicians, as well as up and coming artists. My hope for this blog is that it becomes a vehicle for the unknown. Music is the language that transcends economical, ethnic, and gender barriers. I want the unheard artist to be able to have a platform for you to hear his language.
Kaleigh is a California girl who has a desire to share music. She was trained in classical violin, dabbled with the electric bass, and loves musical genres from classical to video game soundtracks, hair metal to industrial, boybands to contemporary – she truly is a woman of eclectic taste. She received a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in vocal studies, and through the collegiate process she came to find what she was passionate about, and left the desire for a vocal career by the wayside. She loves the interplay between music and film and hopes to one day be able to share her intuition as a music supervisor.
She’s hoping to intern with a local college’s film department in the fall, but you will continue to find her here critiquing and sharing music from many genres and giving you reviews from live shows up and down the California coast. If you are an artist looking for a voice, maybe you’ll find it with Kaleigh.
