Music Murmur ‘Hoguera Noche’ Review

Posted by on May 2, 2013

We have been fortunate enough to have our debut single ‘Hoguera Noche’ reviewed by the lovely Kaleigh of MusicMurmur. Big thanks goes to Kaleigh and you can read her kind words on our little tune below.   HOGUERA NOCHE Staking their identity as a “punkabilly fusion” group that strives to veer off the path of overpolished perfection found in most popular music of today and with influences that range from Anti-Flag to Paramore, Australian band The Curse of Mary Sue is still working on the finishing touches of their debut EP and thus don’t have a lot of recorded music to their name just yet, but their first single “Hoguera Noche” is enough to pull you into their world on its own! Themed after Dia de los Muertos, the lyrics tell a slightly creepy story of what unfolds when the subjects of the song stumble across a “deathday party” during a bonfire night, and the music compliments the mood quite nicely, with a constant guitar riff and rhythm section (provided by guitarist Daniel Thorne, former bassist James Buckingham, and drummer Matt Laybutt) that’ll make you want to mosh just as much as it’ll make you want to, as the lyrics state, dance and sing until death. I’m unsure if this was another influence or not, but vocalist Elanor Jane’s voice reminds me just a tad of Shirley Manson’s from Garbage, and that’s always a huge plus in my book! Having played their very first show last August and keeping on track with a couple every few months or so, along with some spotlighting on American community radio programs and podcasts, the attention The Curse of Mary Sue is garnering is well deserved because even just from one song, their intentions and influences are shown in the best ways. Their quest to set themselves apart from the norm doesn’t alienate them either, and if “Hoguera Noche” is anything to base assumptions off of, the rest of their music should be just as memorable and catchy! MusicMurmur Article WHAT IS MUSICMURMUR Musicmurmur is a blog devoted to music – all music. Over time you will come to see articles written about seasoned musicians, as well as up and coming artists. My hope for this blog is that it becomes a vehicle for the unknown. Music is the language that transcends economical, ethnic, and gender barriers. I want the unheard artist to...

Buster Fayte’s ‘Hoguera Noche’ Review

Posted by on Apr 22, 2013

We have been fortunate enough to have our debut single ‘Hoguera Noche’ reviewed by the fantastic Buster Fayte of Rockabilly Romp. Big thanks goes to Buster Fayte and you can read his kind words on our little tune below. How About A Little Punkabilly To Start Your Week Well, it seems I always get myself into a bit of trouble when I veer too far off of the rockabilly genre, but why not live dangerously? So here’s fair warning: this post is not about traditional rockabilly! The Curse of Mary Sue, a band out of Sydney, Australia, dropped me a line today. (I really enjoy hearing from you bands and musicians!) The band wanted to tell us about their new single, “Hoguera Noche.” And they weren’t trying to pull anything over on me either. They told me right out that they’re not a rockabilly band. But, they said, rockabilly is one of their biggest influences. They also say they wanted “to move away from the plastic pseudo-perfection of modern pop-rock” and that’s a sentiment you and I can probably agree on even if we’re not totally into their style of music. They deserve a listen if just for that statement! I’m always interested to hear what has grown, and what continues to grow, out of rockabilly. “Hoguera Noche” is an aggressive rock tune. As I said, it’s certainly not rockabilly and it’s not psychobilly–punkabilly describes it pretty well. It’s not really the kind of music I go seeking out, but again, I’m always interested and willing to give a listen. I think it’s a pretty cool single, and if you’re up for a bit of a break from rockabilly, I think you’ll enjoy it. You can check it out on The Curse Of Mary Sue Reverb Nation page and if you like what you hear, they’re offering it as a free download. So what do you have to lose? Go give it a listen! Thanks, Elanor, for getting in touch! Recording our Debut E.P

Posted by on Apr 9, 2013

Its on like donkey kong! “A phrase to denote that it’s time to throw down or compete at a high level; something is about to go down. The use of the comical video game character Donkey Kong provides comic relief but the phrase itself has greater or more significance than simply its on.” As we head into the studio we will be bringing our A game and can’t wait to show you all our new songs! We’ve been lucky enough to land a killer setup in the order of the amazing ‘Love Hz Studios‘ with producer extraordinaire Michael Carpenter. The practice and planning for this EP has been tenfold & a never ending journey but never the less it will be all worth it with a final product that will expand upon our debut single “Hoguera Noche’, and cement our sound and style for all our fans to enjoy. So stay tuned for more deets, so...
